Weird and Awesome Things

Wow this week was easily the craziest week that I have had in my mission. So many weird and awesome things happened. We had two full days of meetings last weekend for Christmas. It was like my first time actually eating good safe food. We had a Christmas program with the Mission President and his wife. They are the coolest couple in the world. I want to be like them as well as my parents when I grow up. They are just so wise but I guess that's what happens after you have lived awhile with the same person.

Yesterday was crazy... We were running around the streets in the morning. We heard some yelling and went to go see what was going on. Some guy had a machete and wanted to fight this other dude. I literally thought that the dude with the machete was going to chop the other dude up. It was crazy.

Today was the sickest  Pday that I have had by far. We got permission from the Mission Pres to go to a beach that is a few hours away. The town was called Samana and it was amazing. It felt that I was on vacation. There were the most that I have seen in awhile. We went and walked around for a little bit then we got to walk on this temple run looking bridge. There I saw a kid fishing. I asked if I could have a go. Unfortunately it wasn't my day, I got nothing. But he let me kiss one of his fish. The island was so cool. It was super small and we were the only ones on it. It was our personal paradise. We had a district picnic on on a little dock. Then out of nowhere it started to rain. I love the weather here. It is bipolar but it is always warm so I'm fine with it. Gosh I am realizing how much I love this place. I don't think that I will want to come home  when the time comes.

I am so excited to talk to my fam next week! I hope that you are all doing well in freezing Utah! ha ha suckas! Well i hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas season. I miss you all like crazy! I love this church and I love my mission. Most of all I love my family!

Crazy Things Now Seem Normal...

Well this week felt like it was a day long. We have been doing lots of work with people that live far away in our area. There are so many crazy evangelists here that don't really know much about the bible. Its funny when they try to bible bash with us because we usually shut them down with their bible. Its weird because I don't know what to write about. All of the things that I thought were crazy are just the norm here so I see it every day.
This past week there was a death here in Nagua. The funerals here are so crazy. There  are a million people at the house of the person that passed. They just have the coffin in an open area so everyone can go see the body. It is a very sad thing here. Everyone is crying and there are a few crazy Lady's that get a little out of control and people have to hold them down. This makes me so glad that we have the plan of salvation. When someone dies it shouldn't be sad, it is a part of the plan of salvation. We will get to see everyone again. I feel bad for those crazy Lady's here because they think that life ends after death. I am not saying that death is awesome and that everyone should go try and kill themselves. I'm just saying that everyone will die at some point in time but It is all part of the wonderful plan of happiness.
I had a cool experience this last weekend. We had the chance to visit a small city about an hour away from here because we had a member who had 42 references for us. He is a teacher who teaches about the gospel after his classes. We went and shared our purpose and a little about the gospel and gave out BOMs. I really hope that our visit will spark something in someone there.
The Spanish is still coming but slow. It is difficult because the way that the sentences are structured is different and all of the stinkin conjugations. It is a great test of patience and focus. Sometimes I get down and sad but then I realize why I am out here and who I am here for. God really does answer prayers. It might not be exactly how we think they will be answered but we all know that God works in mysterious ways. I am so glad for this opportunity to be here to help others. I am learning so much everyday. I love and miss you all so much. I hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas season with snow...

The English Teacher

The weeks are starting to feel like days. I cant believe how fast the time is going bye. Well for all of you who got to stuff yourselves last week be grateful! I had the wonderful opportunity to eat chicken rice and beans... again. It kind of stinks that the DR doesn't celebrate holidays like we do. Thanksgiving was nothing here, but I still had time to think about what I am grateful for. There are countless things that I could think of. Being here where people don't have a lot I have realized all of the things that I took for granted. The number one thing that I am thankful for and miss so much are my family and friends. I love and miss you guys so much.

We had lots of cool experiences this week. Each week we are having a bigger and bigger turn out to my English class. It is really fun to teach them. We have been working really hard with new people who live far away. We take one day a week to visit people who live at least 45 minutes away in the country side. Two times this week we had people stop us in the street and tell us that they used to be members a long time ago but not any more (as they were sipping their beers) and both of them said that they miss the church and want to try to be reactivated. I don't know how dedicates they are but if they really want to, it is possible. We also have an investigator couple right now who smoke and drink a lot and asked us about the word of wisdom. I could tell that they both want to quit so bad but they just sat that it will be too hard. I know anything is possible with the lords help. They just need to have faith that they can overcome their addiction.

My Spanish is alright. I have good days and bad days with it. The hard thing for me is conjugating my words. I can practically understand everyone but when I try to speak back sometimes I get mixed up. I know that it just takes time and hard work to receive the gift of tongues. I apologize if none of this is making sense because I think that I am forgetting English... I heard that it snowed a ton back in Utah. It just seems so weird because to me it feels like it is the middle of June and not December...  Haha one last weird thing that happened last night was we were buying empanadas with the ward mission leader, and out of no where there was a frog on my head... Yeah. I don't know how either... haha Well that's my update for this week. I love you all and am so grateful for the opportunity to know every single one of you.

Thanksgiving Day

November 28, 2013

Well another wonderful fun filled week has past. My comp and I have been super busy lately. The attendance of members going to church is rising every week which is cool to see. We have this one investigator who is just awesome. His name is Leonardo. He is honestly a gold investigator but there is a problem with him and being baptized. We have taught him all of the lessons, he does all of the commitments and goes to church every week. Last week after we taught him about tithing he has been paying ever since. He lives way far out in the country side and sells pigs for a living. Every time he sells one he pays tithing. We told him that he doesn't have to because he is not a member but he just says that its the lords money not his. The thing is he cant be baptized because his wife who he is not married to is married to another man who has been in the US for about 20 years. The two want to get married but it will cost a ton of money to pay for the divorce of his girlfriend and the other dude. They have been together for 17 years now. We are looking for a way to help them pay for the divorce so they can get married and he can get baptized.

I finally got my first haircut out here in the field. It isn't too bad... The guy who cut it was this super crazy Evangelist dud. While he was cutting our hair he had this preaching radio station playing. He asked if I knew English. I said yes. With much excitement he had a recording of both Spanish and English. He was loco and now I look like G.I. Joehaha all well...

Every Saturday I teach an English class at the church to whoever wants to attend. Its fun for me to get involved with things like this and to get to know the people better. Last night we had a big party for the ward mission leaders birthday. They had the biggest pot of their notorious DR soup. It is made up of pretty much every kind of meat and vegetable. Dang I left my SD card at my house so I will send some next week. I love my mission and everything that is teaching me about myself and life. I love this church and the things it teaches. Everything about the gospel is to help people have a better and happier life. Happy thanksgiving from paradise!
